MY-BOSS-STOLE-MY-IDEA

“Hey Mr. Bossman!  I have a great idea about how we can improve our company……”

“Well, Mr. employee, that seems a little out there.  Let me think about it.”

Two months or even two years later…

Mr. Bossman says: “Good afternoon Team!  We are here today to implement this great new idea that I have.”  Hooray!

In my experience, it’s pretty common to hear from people who feel like their boss or even a team member has stolen their idea without giving them credit for it.  The bad part about this is that it can leave a tension between people that can stick around like a student loan.  So, how do you deal with that?

VINCE LOMBARDI QUOTE

Bosses Shouldn’t Throw The Ball:

Can you tell who the quarterback is in this photo?  I sure can’t.

Does it even matter?

What matters is that the guy with the ball is moving forward.  That means everyone is working together to get the job done.

There’s someone else missing in this photo who is even more elusive than the quarterback…the coach.

Where is he when the blocks start coming?  Where is he when the ball is thrown?

Truth be told, when it comes to football, we don’t even expect to see the coach blocking, tackling, or throwing.  But why?

BITTERNESS IS THE SWORD IN YOUR HEART

It’s difficult to have authority over people.  There are so many things to consider: inspiration, motivation, results, feelings, safety, etc.  No wonder bosses screw it up so bad.  No wonder, they get paid more.

Even the bosses I’ve appreciated the most, have made some pretty big mistakes.  It would be easy for me to hold it against them…and I have.

What I’ve found though is that holding that in, is a zero sum game.

Culture Warriors is an ongoing weekly post where I’ll be highlighting the best advice, tips, tricks, etc from the hundreds of articles I review each week.  These will all be based on leadership, team engagement, culture, training, motivation, etc.

This week, I’ve selected the top three articles from these categories in order to help filter and learn from the best of the best!

COACH LEADERSHIP

Teams are finicky.  It’s often difficult to figure them out.  Personally, I’m not a huge sports fan, but if I was going to pick a favorite, it would be football.  The team aspect is fascinating; there is much to learn by peeking under the hood here…

Whether it’s winners or losers, the idea that a team’s coach, who doesn’t even take the field, has some ability to make the team win or lose, is pretty amazing.  This is such a good correlation to what we do in the business world, yet we rarely compare the two.

CHRIS GARDNER PRESENTATION

Motivational speeches get a pretty bad rap.  Many people wouldn’t even admit to enjoying them, let alone being truly impacted by an event.  Personally, I believe motivational speeches can be very influential throughout the course of one’s life, especially if the presenter has heart, passion, and skill.

Last week I had the pleasure of witnessing one of the most memorable motivational speeches of my life.  The presenter’s name was Christopher Gardner.  If you aren’t sure who that is, check out the trailer below for the movie, “The Pursuit of Happyness”, starring Will & Jaden Smith:

CORPORATE CULTURE WARRIORS

I realized something pretty profound this week…I don’t know everything – SHOCKER!  Even better though, is the fact that no matter how smart I think I am, there is always someone out there who knows more than I do.  That means that I can learn something new every single day of my already humble life!

The reason I’m stating these obvious facts is that with the research I do every week for this site and for my own personal growth, I run across some pretty amazing content.  So, this is my long winded setup for a new series of posts I’m calling “Culture Warriors”.

Culture Warriors will be an ongoing weekly post where I’ll be highlighting the best advise, tips, tricks, etc from the literally hundreds of articles I review each week.  These will all be based on leadership, team engagement, culture, training, motivation, etc.

My current plan is to select the top five articles from these categories in order to help filter and learn from the best of the best!  I will give you bullet points on the articles, but I do encourage you to read them fully.  There is only so much I can turn into a bullet.  😉

ZAPPOS TOP 100 BEST COMPANIES TO WORK FOR

Ever heard of a company called Zappos?  If you have, you probably already know that their customer service is second to none.  Of course this directly correlates to their very intentional corporate culture and their ongoing success.  If you haven’t heard of them, I suggest you check them out before you are ready to buy your next pair of shoes, pants, or handbag!

As I eluded to in my headline, Zappos has ranked multiple times on Fortune Magazine’s “Top 100 Best Companies To Work For” list.  This isn’t an easy list to get on; let alone stay on.  The list is based on surveys of the employees ranked against several hundred other companies.  A who’s who of solid organizations; all of which are willing participants in this fishbowl competition of their employee satisfaction.

Bad jobs stink!  Whether it’s a bad boss, a bad culture, or you are literally shoveling something that smells.  If you are stuck doing something that you hate, it’s tough to spin that any other way.  Whatever the situation though, you might as well make the best of it.  Here’s how…
